How to convert an image
- Choose your image. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files are supported.
- Pick the new format. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP. For JPG and WebP you can set the quality; 90 is a good default that looks the same as the original.
- Download. The file size of the result is shown before you save it.
The conversion happens on your own device. Nothing is uploaded.
JPG, PNG or WebP: which should you choose?
| Format | Best for | Transparency | File size |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, sharing, online forms | No | Small |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, text, graphics with sharp edges | Yes | Large for photos |
| WebP | Websites and apps that want small files with good quality | Yes | Smallest at similar quality |
JPG is accepted almost everywhere, which makes it the safe choice for forms and email. PNG is lossless: every pixel is kept exactly, so text and line art stay crisp, but photos become large files. WebP usually gives files noticeably smaller than JPG at the same visual quality and also supports transparency, though a few older programs and some upload forms still do not accept it.
Common conversions
PNG to JPG
The usual reason is a smaller file, or a website that only accepts JPG. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose; white is the most common.
WebP to JPG or PNG
Images saved from websites are often WebP. Converting them to JPG or PNG makes them easy to open in older software or to upload where WebP is not allowed.
JPG to PNG
This does not bring back detail that was already lost in the JPG, but it stops further loss if you plan to edit and save the image many times.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting reduce quality?
Converting to PNG keeps every pixel. Converting to JPG or WebP compresses the image; at quality 85–95 the difference is very hard to see. Lower values give smaller files with visible softening.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
PNG and WebP keep them. JPG has no transparency, so those areas become the colour you pick. The checkerboard in the preview shows which parts are transparent.
Can I convert an animated GIF?
The first frame is converted to a still image. To make a GIF from a video instead, use Video to GIF.
Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?
Not directly. On an iPhone you can set Settings › Camera › Formats to “Most Compatible” so new photos are saved as JPG.
I need a PDF, not an image.
Use JPG to PDF or PNG to PDF to put one or more images into a PDF.
