How to resize an image
- Choose your image. Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF onto the box above, or click Choose File.
- Set the new size. Type a width or height in pixels, or tap 50% or 25% to scale it down in one step. With Lock aspect ratio on, the other side updates by itself so the picture is never stretched.
- Pick a format and download. Keep the original format, or save as JPG, PNG or WebP.
The image is resized on your own device. It is never uploaded, so it is safe to use with ID photos, scans and private pictures.
Common sizes people need
| Use | Typical size (pixels) |
|---|---|
| Instagram square post | 1080 × 1080 |
| Instagram portrait post | 1080 × 1350 |
| YouTube thumbnail | 1280 × 720 |
| Full HD wallpaper or slide | 1920 × 1080 |
| Website banner | 1200 – 1600 wide |
| Photo for an online application form | Check the form; often 200 – 600 on each side |
If the shape you need is different from your photo, for example a square from a landscape picture, crop the image first and then resize it. Resizing alone keeps the original shape when the ratio is locked.
Resizing and file size
Fewer pixels almost always means a smaller file. Halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, which usually cuts the file size by well over half. If a form asks for a file under a set size such as 100 KB, resizing is often the cleanest first step, and compressing afterwards finishes the job without the picture turning blocky.
Making an image bigger
You can enter a size larger than the original, but enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured. The result is smoothly scaled and will look softer the more you enlarge it. For print or sharp results, start from the largest original you have.
Frequently asked questions
Will resizing make my image blurry?
Making an image smaller keeps it sharp; the tool uses high-quality scaling so fine lines and text stay clean. Only enlarging beyond the original size makes it softer.
What does “Lock aspect ratio” do?
It keeps the width and height in the same proportion as the original, so faces and objects are not squashed or stretched. Turn it off only if you really need an exact width and height that do not match the original shape.
Which format should I save as?
JPG is best for photos and gives small files. PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency, good for logos and screenshots. WebP gives small files with good quality and works in all modern browsers.
Can I resize an animated GIF?
A GIF is resized as a still image of its first frame. The animation is not kept.
Is there a size limit?
Each side can be up to 20,000 pixels. Very large images depend on how much memory your device has, so a phone may be slower than a computer.
