Reduce Image File Size

Compress JPG, PNG and WebP images — or pick an exact size like 100 KB

How to reduce image file size

  1. Choose your image. Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF onto the box above, or click Choose File.
  2. Pick a quality or a target size. Move the quality slider and watch the preview, or choose a target such as Under 100 KB and let the tool find the best quality that fits.
  3. Download. The size before and after is shown, so you know exactly how much space you saved.

Everything happens on your own device. Your photo is never uploaded, which makes it safe for ID scans, documents and private pictures.

Compress to an exact size: 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB or more

Many online forms only accept images under a set size, such as 50 KB for an exam application or 100 KB for a government portal. Choose a target in Target size, or enter your own under Custom size. The compressor tries real encodings until the file fits, keeping as much quality as possible. If a very small target cannot be reached at the original dimensions without the picture turning blocky, the image is also made slightly smaller in pixels, which looks better than heavy compression.

A real example

We tested a 1.5 MB phone photo of 3549 × 4730 pixels:

TargetResultPixel size
Under 500 KB481 KB2840 × 3785
Under 200 KB195 KB1446 × 1928
Under 100 KB97 KB832 × 1109
Under 50 KB49 KB529 × 705

Each result took between one and four seconds in the browser. Photos that were already saved with heavy compression shrink less with the quality slider alone, which is why the target size option is the quickest way to hit a limit.

Supported formats

  • JPG / JPEG — best for photos. Stays a JPG unless you choose another format.
  • WebP — usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality and keeps transparency.
  • PNG — lossless, so it cannot get much smaller as PNG. In Auto, PNG and GIF are saved as WebP, which keeps transparency and is far smaller.

Tips for the smallest file that still looks good

  • For photos, quality 70–80 is hard to tell apart from the original and often halves the file size.
  • If the image will only be shown small (a profile picture or a thumbnail), resize it first. Fewer pixels shrink the file more than any quality setting.
  • Crop away empty background before compressing.
  • Choose WebP when the website or app you are uploading to accepts it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce photo size to 100KB?

Open your photo above, choose Under 100 KB in Target size, and download. The tool finds the highest quality that stays under 100 KB, and only reduces the pixel size if it has to. You can also use the Compress image to 100KB page, which has this set already.

How do I compress a JPEG to 50KB?

Choose Under 50 KB as the target and keep the format as JPG. See Compress JPEG to 50KB for a page with this preset.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is compressed inside your browser and never leaves your device.

Will compressing reduce the quality?

A little, but at quality 70–80 most people cannot see the difference. The preview shows the actual compressed result, so you can check before you download.

Why did my PNG get bigger?

PNG is a lossless format, so saving it again cannot remove detail to save space. Choose Auto or WebP to make it much smaller while keeping transparency.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Very large images (over 50 megapixels) may be slow on phones because all the work happens on your device.
