How to crop an image
- Choose your image. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP onto the box above, or click Choose File.
- Pick a shape. Click a preset — 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5 — or choose Free and draw any rectangle on the picture.
- Adjust. Drag the box to move it and pull the corners to resize it. The exact pixel size is shown as you go.
- Download. The cropped image is saved in its original format, at full quality.
Cropping happens in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded.
Which aspect ratio should I use?
| Ratio | Best for |
|---|---|
| 1:1 (square) | Profile pictures for WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn and most apps |
| 4:5 (portrait) | Instagram feed posts, which show it larger than a square |
| 9:16 (tall) | Stories, Reels, Shorts, TikTok and WhatsApp status |
| 16:9 (wide) | YouTube thumbnails, presentations, website banners and desktop wallpapers |
| Free | Removing an unwanted edge, or cutting out one part of a screenshot |
Crop without losing quality
Cropping only removes pixels from the edges; the part you keep is not re-scaled. JPG and WebP files are saved again at high quality (95), PNG files stay lossless, and GIFs are saved as PNG. To make the picture smaller in pixels afterwards, use Resize Image; to make the file smaller, use Reduce Image File Size.
Tips
- Keep faces and important details away from the very edge — some apps round the corners or show a circle.
- For a sharp result, crop from the original photo rather than from a screenshot of it.
- Crop first, then compress: removing background makes the file smaller too.
