Compress Image for WhatsApp

Make photos small enough to send quickly, while keeping them clear

How to compress a photo for WhatsApp

  1. Drop your photo onto the box above.
  2. The target is set to Under 200 KB as a JPG, a good balance between clarity and speed. Change it if you prefer.
  3. Download the photo and send it in WhatsApp as usual.

Why compress before sending?

WhatsApp shrinks photos itself when you send them, but you cannot choose how much. Compressing first means:

  • You control the quality — check the preview and pick the trade-off you like.
  • Faster sending on slow or limited data, especially when sharing many photos at once.
  • Smaller documents — when you send a photo as a document to avoid WhatsApp's own compression, a compressed copy saves data for you and the person receiving it.

In our test, a 1.5 MB phone photo became 195 KB at 1446 × 1928 pixels — about the size WhatsApp itself uses for photos, so it still looks sharp on a phone screen.

Profile pictures and status

For a profile picture, crop the photo square (1:1) first, then compress it here. For status updates, a 9:16 crop fills the screen best.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a photo be for WhatsApp?

Around 100–300 KB and about 1600 pixels on the long side looks sharp on phones and sends quickly. The 200 KB preset on this page lands in that range.

Does WhatsApp reduce photo quality?

Yes. Photos sent normally are compressed by WhatsApp. Sending as a document keeps the file as it is, which is why a pre-compressed copy saves data.

Can I compress several photos?

This page compresses one photo at a time. Each takes a second or two.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. They are compressed on your own device and never sent to a server.
